Eureka Tournament cancelled

This year the Eureka tournament will not run due to our organisers being a little over stretched for time, but it has definitely not been abandoned... 2013 will be a revival tournament to look forward to! Long Live the Eureka Spirit!!

Ballarat Club Championship

The 2012 Ballarat Chess Club Champion is Patrick Cook on 6, followed closely by Rob Loveband on 5.5, and Vineetha, Peter and Jamie sharing third place with 4.5 points out of 8.
The Reserves Champion is Jonathon Yates on 8 out of 9, winning all games but one against Thumula Gamage. Thumula and Tom Oppenheim both scored 7.5 points in what was a closely fought and exciting championship. more...

With Vineetha's unexpected loss to Chris in a round nine game, the cross table shows that with 6 points Patrick is now 1/2 pt ahead of any possible competitor and when the dust settles will be the 2012 Ballarat Chess Club Champion!

Thumula on the FIDE ratings board

Thanks to Thumula's recent good performance at the Asian Amateur with wins against players in the 1600 and 1700s, he now has a FIDE rating of 1556 which is far above his 1063 ACF rating and more indicative of the level of chess he is capable of. Ballarat Club Championship to begin

Please come and join the Club Championship starting on Wednesday the 9th. It is our main rated round robin tournament, usually going for around a dozen games. With a wide range of rated and unrated players, there will be challenges for all, and some great chess to enjoy! We will have an open and a reserves section, all welcome!

Arthur Koelle visit

Arthur is back for a visit and we plan to have a special event on Wednesday evening. Intending players should try to arrive at 7.45pm ready for an 8pm start. We will provide a light supper and there will be couple of small mystery prizes as well! As Arthur would like to play as many members as possible on the night, so the time controls will probably be around 5 minutes a side.

Condolences

Members of the chess club were saddened to hear of the passing of Andy Miitel on Tuesday 27th, and extend our condolences to Peter and family. Andy was an important figure in the club in the 1960s and was our first life member. We will post more on his life and contribution to the club, shortly.
