Andrew Brown, Domagoj Dragicevic, Milenko Lojanica, Carl Gorka & David Hacche = 3rd (5.5 points)
There were also three ratings groups, determined by dividing the total number of players with ratings under 2000 by three. A first and second prize was awarded for each.
Group A
Nigel Barrow, Edsil Dilla & Cedric Antonis (=1st in section, 5.0 points)
Group B
Justin Tan & Joshua Dalton (=1st in section, 4.5 points)
Group C
Isaac Ng (1st, 4 points)
Andrew Gurevich (2nd 3.5 points)
There was also a prize awarded for the highest finishing Ballarat player, which wound up a tie between Bas Van Riel and Jamie Brotheridge (who had a solid tournament, beating a couple of higher rated players) each scored 4 points

Ballarat 2008. Fine performances from country players

Hi all,
I have noticed two very fine performances from victorian country players.
In final top twenty performers you can see only two players from country.
Nigel Barrow (EE) played tournament of his life beating highly fencied D.Hacche and C.Wallis(who had shocking tournament) and drawing against J.Morris and Z .Lojanica.
5 points out of seven games is an excellent result.

Mark Bruere is a very dedicated correspondence player also performed well in Ballarat 2008.Wins against C.Wallis and M.Pyke showed that country veteran can play good chess over the board.
Hopefully we will see some players from country Victoria qualified to play in Victorian Championship

Thanks for posting your games Carl & Cedric, congratulations to Leonid Sandler & Dusan Stojic for their wonderful result and thanks to the organisers of the tournament (it was great to see so many people helping out at the end to pack up all the sets). Also, thank you to those who have expressed kind words here about me. There were some fun moments away from the actual chess - such as when I was sitting next to Ken Czuczman and Eddie Kocjancic while they had some fun trying to spell each other's surnames. It was also nice to catch up with some old friends, as well as some of the people I only really know from this forum. The cutest moment came when standing around in the courtyard after I'd finished a game, chatting with Scott Stewart, Greg Gatto and Elliot Renzies, only to have one of the young female players come up to us and say "Um, would any of you like to play chasey?" I arrived a few minutes after the opening ceremony had started, to find that Malcolm had volunteered me for the players' disputes committee. I'd soon get a chance at revenge however as I was drawn to play him in round one. Before I could so much as say j'adoube, there was a redraw and I found myself sitting opposite David Hacche (rated 2100 plus) who I had drawn a game with at the same tournament last year.
